NODE 12: Around the Circle

Calanais is one of the few standing stone sites where most of the original megaliths have stood without toppling. Where many other stone sites have been extensively reconstructed, the Callanish Stones have stood for centuries intact, due to the protective peat that buried many of the stones. When the site was excavated in 1980-1, the center megalith was found to have a socket hole packed with bowling ball size rocks and clay chunks, although the hole itself was determined to be no deeper than four feet.
