07: THE CENTRAL MEGALITH
The central menhir is by far the tallest stone, at just
over 15 feet high. At one time, however, it appeared to stand only ten
feet high due to the peat that had built up over the centuries since its
erection.
More than any other megalithic configuration, Callanish
has an obvious "key" or "focus. This is a single, particularly
striking menhir....Although the most regular of megaliths, it had irregularities
to strangely enhance its severe beauty; its base broadened out as if
to strengthen its roots in the earth, and third of the way up on one
side it had bulge like that of a knee or elbow.
