NODE 03: Moonstone

This heart-shaped stone is out of alignment with the stones that form the rest of the East Avenue. Ponting writes that "an observer standing by the north edge of stone no. 9 (see NODE 14) and viewing along the flat northwestern face of stone no. 34 would see the full moon rise above the stone when the moon was in its northern extreme position."

The peat was so high around this stone that only its twin-humped crest protruded from the ground, giving one observer the false impression that it was a fallen stone. Only one stone is known to have fallen (see NODE 13) and consequently turned upright, however, making Callanish one of the only practicallly intact megalith sites in the world.
